Biographical Information

Roy Lemmon Halversen was born October 17, 1904, in Paradise, Utah, the second of three sons of Louis Henry and Minnie Lemon Halversen. He attended grade school in Paradise and in Park City, Utah and was graduated from South Cache High School. Afterwards, Roy graduated from Utah State University in 1925 where he taught at Box Elder High School in Brigham City. In the fall of 1926, he enrolled at the Julliard School of Music in New York City for advanced study on the violin. A year later he joined the faculty of the Branch Agricultural College in Cedar City, beginning a career that spanned forty-three years of distinguished service. Roy's life and the college and the community merged as he was the moving force behind the local symphony orchestra that incorporated both community members and college students. Many of the members of the orchestra were residents who he taught in the local schools, privately or at the college. He was active in the Jaycees, receiving their Distinguished Service Award in 1940. He was active in the community by serving as president of both the Cedar City Chamber of Commerce and the Cedar Rotary Club. He was secretary of the Music Arts Committee for over ten years, and was a member of the Cedar Coordinating Council Board. Roy passed away March 13, 1970. The Music Department at Southern Utah University has established an annual Roy Halverson Concert in memorial of him.
