Biographical Information
Jim Jones was born in 1933 to Elton and Thelma Jones. He began his formal training at the Art Center School in Los Angeles, then studied at the University of California-Los Angeles, finally receiving his Bachelors from the University of Utah.
He became well known for his paintings of the American Southwest, specifically of Zion and the Grand Canyon National Parks. He later built his home in Rockville, Utah, and modeled it after the old Grand Canyon North Rim Lodge.
Jones had a desire to see an art museum in Cedar City, Utah. When he died in 2009 at the age of 76 he endowed Southern Utah University with his home and his last 14 paintings. Which allowed for the creation of the Southern Utah Museum of Art.
