Historical Information
Southern Utah University and Cedar City have a long history of collecting and exhibiting art. Beginning in 1941 with the Cedar City Arts Exhibit and Committee, many art works hung in buildings around Cedar City and on the then Branch Agricultural College (BAC) campus. As BAC grew into the College of Southern Utah (CSU), and then the State College of Southern Utah (SUSC), art was displayed across various community buildings. Around 1969, SUSC established the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery as a localized location to house their collections and hold exhibitions.
The Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery remained in what is now known as the Braithwaite building until the Southern Utah Museum of Art was opened on July 7, 2016, as part of the newly completed Beverly Sorenson Center for the Arts complex. Designed to represent the region’s famed slot canyons, the 20,500 square foot building boasts convertible gallery space, a classroom, and a visible conservation area.
