Institutional History

The Utah Parks Company (UPC) was created in 1923, as subsidiary of the Union Pacific Railroad. UPC's mission was to use the national railroad system to increase passenger traffic to and from the National Parks.

Patterned after the guest services at Yellowstone National and Grand Canyon National Parks, Union Pacific Railroad backed UPC in the improvement of roads, creations of lodges and providing transportation into the scenic areas. Union Pacific Railroad create the Loop tour as a comprehensive travel package which included train travel to Iron County, Utah, meals, accommodations and a bus tour around the Parks.

Employees for UPC mostly comprised local college students. Approximately 40,000 young men and women worked for the Utah Parks Company between 1923 and 1973.
