Biographical Information
Elton Jones was the son of Thomas Jedediah Jones and Ellen Eva Wilson Lunt. He was born on January 22, 1901, in Cedar City Utah. He worked at the Cedar Lumber and Commission Company for a few years, then attending the Branch Agricultural College where he was involved in both debate, music and drama. In 1920 he was called on a mission for the LDS church to the Eastern States. Elton married Thelma Philena Esplin on December 26, 1923, in the St. George Temple.
After marriage Elton worked briefly as the Secretary for the Chamber of Commerce, and then opened an accounting firm in 1927, and then returned to that role ten years later. In 1930, Jones began working and providing equipment to the crews working on the Utah-Arizona Grand Canyon highway. A year later, the Cedar Motors Company declared bankruptcy. Afterwards Elton returned to his accounting business, ran out of the Jones Garage for several years. During this time Elton was a charter member of the Cedar City Lions Club, participated in community drama and music productions, and served in the LDS church in various leadership roles. Elton also served as the chief clerk at Utah Parks Company for over twenty years, retiring in 1963. Elton passed away on March 1, 1971.
