Scope and Contents

The Ancel J. Adams Collection contains written and photographic materials relating to the Parowan area. Written materials in the collection consist of family history documents, biographies, correspondence and a poem written by Adams. Photographs in the collections are of Parowan, Utah events and buildings from 1910.

Biographical / Historical

Ancel James Adams was born on December 13, 1891 to James Jamison Adams and Caroline E. Redd in Parowan, Utah. He was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints on March 3, 1900. in 1914, he was called to serve in the Eastern States Mission. After his return in 1916, he enlisted for miliatry service as part of the Conscription Act. It is unclear if he served in the military during World War I. He married Elizabeth Gertrude Decker in Salt Lake City, Utah on January 10, 1919.

Adams returned to Iron County, Utah where he worked in construction and agriculture. He was active in the LDS church, as well as the local community. He served in various church callings in local Ward and Stake Leadership positions. He was one of a handful of Parowan men who helped raise money for the new Branch Agricultural College Gymnasium in 1928.

He and Elizabeth had ten children. He died on June 16, 1983 in Cedar City, Utah.
