Scope and Contents
The Gymnastics Team record group document the competitive gymnastics team at Southern Utah University in Cedar City, Utah from 1971 to current. Majority of items related to the team, their competitions and general administrative information. Score sheets span the entire period. Early records include additional information like programs and publicity materials. Photographs of the teams are sporadic between the 1980s to 2000. Twenty team binders contain history of the team for each season.

Biographical / Historical
Gymnastics have been a part of Southern Utah University since it’s creation of the Branch Normal School in 1898. During the first 50 years, gymnastics was mostly a part of men’s physical education. It is uncertain when the first women’s gymnastics team was formed. However, beginning in the 1960s, women’s gymnastics began being offered as a physical education class or an intramural sport.
Professor Kathryn Berg developed the first competitive gymnastics team in the late 1960s. This team continued off an on until 1991, when Southern Utah University created the first official gymnastics team. Since then, the team has grown to a nationally recognized team, honored for its athletic accomplishments and scholastic achievements of the gymnasts. The gymnastics team, named the Flippin Birds, is part of the Athletics Department and competes in the Western Athletics Conference.
