History
Gymnastics have been a part of Southern Utah University since it’s creation of the Branch Normal School in 1898. During the first 50 years, gymnastics were relegated to mostly men’s physical education. No set date exists for the first women’s gymnastics team can be found. However, beginning in the 1960s, women’s gymnastics began being offered as either a physical education class or an intramural sport. Professor Kathryn Berg developed the first competitive team in the late 1960s. This team continued off an on until 1991, when SUU created the first official gymnastics team. Since that time, the team has grown to a nationally recognized team, being honored for not only its athletic accomplishments, but for the scholastic achievements of its gymnastics.
