Florence Spilsbury Higbee Collection
Scope and Content
The Florence Spilsbury Higbee Collection contains documentation from Myron Franklin Higbee's grandfather about the Mountain Meadow Massacre. It includes a hand written testimony of the event given to his children, court papers from prosecution due to involvement in the massacre, and correspondence with Juanita Brooks about Higbee's account of the massacre. Another important document is the last written testimony of Oliver Cowdrey given to Samuel W. Richards.

Biographical Information
Florence Spilsbury Higbee was born on December 28, 1891, in Toquerville to David and Maria Ann Richards Spilsbury. She graduated from the Branch Normal School and taught school in Toquerville for 2 years. Florence was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a member of DUP (Daughters of Utah Pioneers) and the Utah State Historical Society. She married Myron Franklin Higbee June 10, 1914 in the St. George LDS Temple. She had two sons and a daughter: Clyde F., William, and Ione. Her husband died June 20, 1966. Florence died October 4, 1986.

This collection has been divided into three subgroups: I. John Mount Higbee Papers (personal history, Mountain Meadows Massacre); II. Memorabilia and Photographs (Deseret News, Branch Normal School memorabilia, photographs and memorabilia removed from the collection); III. Samuel W. Richards Papers.

Items in this collection were donated by Florence Higbee in 1965.
