This collection contains the personal and professional papers of Inez Cooper. Much of the collection pertains to her personal interests, including poetry, domestic arts, political involvement, and research. Some of the papers also include professional correspondence, and research on Utah Place Names.

Biographical Information

Inez Ruth Stevens was born on July 6, 1919, in Raymond, Alberta Canada to William and Ruth Stevens. In 1940, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Speech and Drama from Brigham Young University. On June 19, 1941, she married Laurence Clark Cooper in Alberta, Canada. The couple went on to have six children.

After their marriage the couple lived in Vernal, Utah where Inez found work directing plays, writing for the local newspaper, as well as teaching and the local elementary and high schools. In 1958, the Coopers moved to Cedar City, Utah. Inez found work at the College of Southern Utah, later Southern Utah University, as an English instructor, advisor for various student associations, and later as the first Archivist in the university's Special Collections.

Aside from her professional work, Inez was active in several community associations, including the Iron County Mission, the Cedar City Birthday Celebration, and the Southern Utah Poetry Society. Inez passed away on August 13, 1996 in Cedar City, Utah.
