Scope and Contents

This Jeanne O. Bethers Collection contains personal papers, photographs, correspondence and writings of Jeanne O. Bethers. The majority of items are news clippings from the Deseret News, or typed articles written by Bethers in her role as a correspondent to the Deseret News in Salt Lake City and the photographs which accompanied the articles. Some photographs were taken by Bethers herself.

Other items in the collection include subject files relating to Bether's articles. These topics cover all aspects of life and special events and disasters that occurred in Cedar City, Utah.

Other materials in the collection are Deseret News Style Handbooks, articles and music written by or performed by local residents and magazine clippings.

Personal items in the collection relate to Bether's school assignments and diaries from 1945-1955, maps and brochures from travels, and documents showing Bether's interactions with local organizations and committees.

Biographical / Historical

Jeanne Orme Bethers was born November 17, 1906, in Tooele, Utah, to Charles Alvin Orme and Ada Madden Dunn. She married Pratt Mcquire Bethers in Salt Lake City, Utah, on September 9, 1929. They moved to Cedar City, Iron County, Utah.

Pratt Bethers was a school teacher, principal, and school administrator. Jeanne O. Bethers was the Cedar City correspondent for the Deseret News for many years, and became the Deseret News Bureau Chief for the newspaper over Southern Utah from 1947 to 1964.

She was also active in the community as a church and civic worker. She was the first secretary of the Cedar City Coordinating Council, was secretary to the Southern Utah Youth Guidance Committee of the LDS church, and was president of the Southern Utah Associated Women's Clubs from 1938 to 1940. She died on December 25, 1969.
