Biographical Information

William Wallace Flanigan was born February 17, 1877, in Rockville, Utah to Thomas Emmett Flanigan and Ida Johnson. He married Nellie H. Draper on March 15, 1898, in St. George, Utah. In 1900 Flanigan hiked the Zion Narrows alone as one of the first ever to attempt the trek. Later in 1901 William and his brother, David Flanigan, built the Zion Cable on Cable Mountain to bring lumber off the mountain to the sawmill below. Starting in 1910, Flanigan worked for 33 years as a landscaper for the Branch Normal School and Branch Agricultural College. Flanigan discovered an arch in 1916 that was later named Flanigan Arch in his honor. From January 1, 1899, to his death William Flanigan kept a day-to-day diary detailing the events of his life.
