Institutional History
Southern Utah University was first established in Cedar City, Utah as the Branch Normal School (BNS) in 1897. In 1919, BNS came under the jurisduction of the Utah State Agricultural College (USAC), and was renamed the Branch Agricultural College (BAC).
The Branch Agricultural College slowly grew, until 1953, when it changed purpose again, and became the College of Southern Utah (CSU). During this time, CSU gained its first four year programs and became an important secondary educational instution of Utah and Nevada. In 1969, CSU then became the Southern Utah State College (SUSC). This name change signified the continual campus growth, including extensive building and expansion. In 1991, SUSC achieved University status and became what is now called Southern Utah University (SUU). As of 2024, SUU had over 12,000 students and 1,000 faculty.
